We recommend reading the following, to become familiar with the basics of Temple Studies as it has been developed by Dr. Barker, as laid out in her book Temple Theology: An Introduction (London: SPCK, 2004). We recommend these three readily-available articles introducing Latter-day Saints to Dr. Barker’s work and its relevance in LDS theology:
- Margaret Barker, “What Did King Josiah Reform?” delivered at Brigham Young University in 2003, published in Glimpses of Lehi’s Jerusalem (FARMS, 2004).
- Frederick M. Huchel, “Antecedents of the Restoration in the Ancient Temple,” FARMS Review, Volume 21, Number 1, 2009, pp. 9-25.
- Hugh Nibley, “What Is A Temple? The Idea of the Temple in History,” Mormonism and Early Christianity [CWHN 4], pp. 355 ff.
Important books relevant to the Temple, Temple Studies, and the “Mormonism and the Temple: Examining an Ancient Religious Tradition” conference.
- The House of the Lord, James E. Talmage (Salt Lake City: Deseret News, 1912). Now published by Deseret Book Company.
- The Temple: Meeting Place of Heaven and Earth, John M. Lundquist (London and New York: Thames & Hudson, 2012).
- Solomon’s Temple: Myth and History, William J. Hamblin and David Rolph Seely (London and New York: Thames & Hudson, 2007)
A list of articles published over the years in BYU Studies which are relevant to the temple is also available.
